Rubbing Off Latex Allergy Symptoms

Latex allergy is the body's overreaction to the protein in rubber. Latex is a natural rubber that comes from a liquid of tropical rubber trees. The liquid is processed and converted into rubber products for work and home use. Balloons, rubber bands, rubber toys, pacifiers, baby bottle nipples, diapers, sanitary pads, adhesive tapes, bandages and condoms are made of latex. Such thin and elastic rubber can actually cause allergic reactions. Also, several medical and dental supplies are made of latex, such as gloves, dental dams, urinary catheters, tourniquets and other equipment for resuscitation.

The common symptoms for latex allergy include - sneezing or runny/stuffy nose, coughing, rash or hives, itchy/watery red eyes, tightening of the chest, shortness and difficulty in breathing and shock. People with such allergy can get sores, bumps, redness or cracks on their hands while wearing latex gloves. In some severe cases, allergens can become life-threatening without any warning or manifestations of symptoms. Such symptoms often appear within 12 to 36 hours from contact with the latex material.

Health workers and other people working/using rubbers frequently have the highest risk for latex allergy. People who have had previous surgeries, especially during childhood, have latex allergic tendencies. Also, latex allergies can affect those who have spina bifida and urologic abnormalities.

There are no permanent treatment for latex allergy. However, risks from symptoms can be reduced by avoiding direct contact with such rubber.

If you think that you have such allergy, you need to consult a doctor (preferable an allergist). The doctor will run some test as well as as your medical history. Skin testing is the most common test for any allergy. In most cases, the latex will be rubbed on the skin. If any rash, redness or bump will appear, this would mean that you are allergic.
